Hey ladies!
So there was a graduate studies fair at my school today and I totally nabbed all the stuff...
The package with the people on it is a pack of gum and all those colours are loads of post-its!!!
Do I really want to study to become a chiropractor in New York? Nah, but let me take all your stuff!
Heh heh...
Actually useful information gained:
1) If I did want to be a chiropractor, the US would be cheaper than Canada.
2) Why would I go to the States when I could go to NEW ZEALAND for almost the same price?!?
3) Scottish accents are even more adorable in person.
4) The is an optometry school in Glasgow, Scotland.
5) Scottish people are awesome!!
Note about all the Scottish talk: There were two people at a booth representing all the Scottish universities, one guy and one girl and they were both adorable (and rather fanciable). We started our conversation by the guy asking me how I was doing when I walked by, to which I replied "A lot better now that I've heard your voice!" which turned into a talk about where I'd heard the accent before and a brief discussion of Scottish people in Doctor Who and generally a bunch of laughs between all of us. I spent about 7 minutes laughing with these people before I took their pamphlet (they didn't have any pens) and said my farewells.
I may be going to Scotland...
You may be asking why I even went to this thing when I've been so adament about being an optometrist, either here or in the US. Was I that desperate for stationary?
The truth is that I'm trying to be realistic and expand my options. I have read the statistics of the classes that get into the Canadian and American schools of optometry and quite frankly I'm at the bottom of all their academic requirements. I need to be looking at other options, in different programs and/or different places, if I want to have something to do next year.
Another reason, and probably the most important, is that these people are all waiting for you to talk to them. They want to tell you about the program, they want to help you figure out what to do and they've got all the information. What they're looking for is a connection with the people passing by, they want to draw you in and sell you what they've got going on and there are two great things about that:
1) You can get all the information you need without frustrating yourself to the ends of the earth, and
2) You can try and turn the tables on them.
Almost every graduate school, and certainly every job, has an interview process these days and that interview is all about making them remember you, if not love you. What better way to practice than to try and make an impression on the school reps that are right in front of you? I will consider today a success, whether or not anything comes of it academically, because when I brought one of my friends to a booth I'd already visited about an hour earlier, the guy greeted me by my first name. Networking success!!
I realize that you ladies have another year before everything really starts for you but let me tell you now, as only a fourth year can, that it's never too early to start.
Much love ladies,
Dina
P.S. Another lovely part of my day was introducing myself to the guy who's sat in front of my for my last two psych classes. I had previously admired his shoulders and very short hair (like, buzz short, I really want to run my hand over the prickles) and now I know that he's in legal studies, having already completed police foundations at college and is dying of essays. We both agreed that writing four essays as a midterm is almost murder. Also, he is my height and may be considered handsome... Just thought I'd throw that out there :)
P.P.S. I have a paper to write tonight that I don't want to write so if you want to keep me company... Please do!
Oh goodness, the grad people are coming back again next week here and I am scared of them, I want to just pretend that is an issue that doesn't exist thank you school people, please stop reminding me.
ReplyDeleteScottish accents are awesome, Scottish people taking in said accents about Doctor Who is totally awesome.
I like the sounds of legal studies dude who is your height and may be considered handsome.
Haha, DIna you make me laugh so much. I love that you go out and just nab all the schools stuff. Also, I think its weird that a school is giving out packs of gum with peoples faces on them... Random much?
ReplyDeletePlease go to Scotland! That would be the coolest and I will miss you, but I will visit you!! All the time!! :p
Moorrrreeee deets on legal studies dude please!! :)
I definitely nabbed two more pens today (second round of grad studies people) and talked to more UK people. I think that if I can't get into the Canadian school, Scotland is the next option. Honestly, how cool would that be?!?
ReplyDelete@Valerie: You should be afraid and you should be afraid now because if you're afraid now you may not be completely terrified next year when it really matters. You can do it! All of it!!!
@Both I will give you more details as they come up. I talke to the guy once (okay, twice) on the one day! There are not yet many deets to be had. I will keep you informed of any developments though
FREE SHITS GOOD SHIT! (student life motto)
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed that you are looking at all this school stuff. it's my goal for this year to have a rough idea of my post-undergrad schooling laid out. then I can narrow it down a little more in fourth year.
also YAY for people from the UK! it's wonderful!
