Once upon a time, there was a little bee. She was a happy bee. She had a whole hive full of other bees, which she went to work with every day, but there were not many bees that she really truly liked and would tell all her secrets to. In fact, there was only one other bee. Those bees were good friends from the moment they met. They gathered pollen and flower nectar together, and played together and teased the bears, and life was good. But the bee’s friend was a very sociable bee and had lots of other friends as well. This meant that the bee’s friend would often go off and play with the other bees, so our bee was left on her own.
One day, while she was flying through the woods, she happened upon a little caterpillar. The caterpillar was chasing aphids. What fun! The bee loved chasing aphids as well! The caterpillar and the bee quickly became friends. But they lived very far away from each other and could not visit very often. So although they still liked to spend time together, their time was limited.
When the time came for the bees to decide which Bug School they wanted to go to, the two bee friends unfortunately had to part ways. The bee’s friend was fine. She had all kinds of other bees to be with. But our bee was lonely. She worried about whom she would talk to in her new school! But then, she found out that her friend the caterpillar chose the same school that she chose! The two friends were very happy that they would get to spend more time together at their new school, and that they would both have someone to talk to.
So they became even closer friends than before, but it was still just the two of them. Although they were happy, they were still a little lonely. They wanted more friends.
One day, the bee was again, out exploring the woods. She noticed a dragonfly fluttering around by the pond. Curious, the bee flew over and asked what the dragonfly was doing. The dragonfly invited the bee to join her in hunting for mosquitoes above the surface of the water. The bee, of course, thought the dragonfly was crazy. Who would want to go whizzing over the open water at top speeds? No thanks. But the dragonfly insisted. You see, this particular dragonfly was a little clumsy, and her mother told her she could only go out over the pond to hunt mosquitoes if she had a friend with her. The bee eventually agreed since the dragonfly seemed so eager to get out there, and the bee actually ended up having lots of fun! She liked the dragonfly!
After they played for a while, the bee found out that the dragonfly went to the same Bug School as her and the caterpillar! The bee explained that they were a little lonely, and the dragonfly joyously invited them to join her and her friends for lunch the next day. The bee graciously accepted. Even if the dragonfly was a little frightening at times with her high energy levels, she was a very very nice dragonfly.
So the next day, the bee and the caterpillar met the dragonfly for lunch. She had a large group of friends, and among them was a praying mantis. She was a mysterious bug indeed, but seemed nice enough. As the bee and the caterpillar spent more time with her, they found, oddly enough, that it was very easy for them to open up to her and tell her anything at all, and they could not only trust her to keep their secret, but she also offered excellent advice. The praying mantis was a very good friend to them indeed.
So the four little insects became friends. The bee, the caterpillar, the dragonfly and the praying mantis. They went everywhere and did everything together. They were inseparable. They faced many challenges throughout their time at Bug School, but they stuck through it together. When the time came for them to leave Bug School, they had all very much grown as insects. The bee earned her stripes and gained the confidence to make new friends wherever she went. The caterpillar became a stunning butterfly right in front of her friends’ eyes. The dragonfly outgrew her clumsiness (for the most part) and could now fly frontwards, backwards, and side to side with ease. And the praying mantis shed her old skin to reveal her beautiful new green skin and wings. They were ready to face the world as new insects, and it was good.
And although they are not together as a group any more, they are always there to support each other and offer a kind word when needed. Even when it seemed like nothing was going right, they knew that their buggy friends would lend a wing to help them back on their feet. And the bee, for one, will always be eternally grateful for her friends.
The End.
