Baby, It's Cold Outside

It was a day like any other, or, at least, it started that way. Dawn Ackheart started her day the way she always did. She got out of bed, took care of some essential processes in the bathroom, and ate her breakfast as a start to her day. She dressed to impress from her colourful wardrobe and grabbed her bright red coat of the way out the door.

Dawn was going shopping downtown. Sure, there weren’t that many places to go in downtown River Town, but that had never stopped her before and she knew she would find something fabulous before the day was out. She was a woman on a mission!

For those that knew Dawn the event that took place on the corner of King Street and Water Street would come as no surprise. Dawn was skipping down Water Street, eager to get to Second Cup around the corner. If she had made this trip the week before maybe that would have been all that happened but this week had brought the cold and with it, ice. And ice, as everyone knows, does not help the uncoordinated.

Dawn whirled around the corner in a blur of colours. She was too caught up in where she was going and the prospect of warm coffee to pay attention to her feet and did not notice the patch of ice directly ahead. As she skipped onto it, looking completely the opposite direction, her feet began to slide and before she knew it she was sliding uncontrollably faster. Just as she started to call out she crashed into a stranger with an “oomph”!

Dawn’s legs tangled with the stranger’s and, although she tried to prevent it from happening, they both fell onto the ice with a groan. They didn’t hit hard because they’d cushioned each other’s landings but it still took Dawn a few seconds to get her bearings. When she did get her bearings she was mildly horrified. She had just smashed into a complete stranger and bowled him over! Usually her klutziness only affected her and she’d learned to deal with it but a complete stranger! She was just about to apologize when he spoke,

“Crashing into strange blokes in the middle of the street is so not on,” he said in a devastating baritone, “You know that right?”

He pulled them up so that they were sitting on the ground and turned to look at her.

Dawn stared. That was about all she could do at the moment. As his lips curled into a smile at his joke she took in the man she had run into.

What had originally rendered her speechless was his voice which felt like melted chocolate as it poured over her. That and his sexy British accent would have been enough to silence her but now that she looked there was so much more. Her gaze skimmed over his impressive figure of broad, lightly muscled shoulders and continued downward across his defined chest and abdomen to his narrow hips and then travelled back up until his eyes locked with hers. His amber eyes, alight with amusement met hers and he raised an eyebrow. It was then she remembered that he’d asked a question and probably expected an answer.

“Yeah, I kinda do that a lot,” Dawn answered.

“You actually make a habit out of knocking people over?” The stranger grinned as he stood up and the sound rumbled through his chest.

“No! Not the knocking people over, the falling down part!” Dawn explained.

Dawn also tried to stand up but slipped and was about to become reacquainted with the ground when a pair of strong arms caught her and pulled her into a warm body.

He was really laughing now. Dawn could feel the vibrations through their coats.

“I see what you mean!” He chuckled as he pulled back to look at her and offered her his hand. “I’m Felix, by the way.”

Of all the people Dawn could have bumped into she was glad it had been Felix. Slightly taller than her, she could see that now that they were standing, with his sandy blonde hair falling just slightly into his eyes, eyes that were still sparkling with delight even if the rest of his face had become more composed after his laughter. As she grasped his hand she admired his strength of his grip and the firm confidence of his hold.

“Dawn.” She said, returning his smile.

“Well Dawn, now that you seem to be at equilibrium again, can I ask you where you were going so fast?”

He hadn’t looked away from her yet and Dawn felt a bit of a blush rise to her cheeks at the intensity of his gaze.

“I was actually going around the corner to Second Cup,” she replied and managed to drag her eyes away from him long enough to glance in the direction of the shop.

“That’s a coffee place, yeah?” Felix asked. When she nodded he added, “Would you mind if I tagged along?”

For the first time in their conversation Felix looked a little unsure of himself. This was what really struck Dawn. A sexy, British, considerate, and mildly heroic guy was asking, but not expecting, to spend more time with her? There was only one answer she could give.

“Of course you can, silly!” She burst out.

Felix laughed and Dawn, back to her bold self, linked their arms and lead them down the street to Second Cup, conversation, laughter, and some steamy... drinks!

A Special Day

Hey ladies!

Soo... today I've been an enormous pile of squee for most of my waking hours. This is made even more impressive by the fact that my waking hours today contain several hours that I am not usually awake for (5am for example).

That's right, I actually got up and watched the Royal Wedding as it happened and I loved every minute of it.

What was the best part?

I think my favourite bit was when Kate was walking down the aisle. Will and Harry were up at the front and are supposed to stare straight forward but Harry took a look back before leaning over and saying something along the lines of "Wait 'til you see her". Will tried but then snuck a peek back at Kate a few seconds later. So cute!

Who wouldn't want to look at Kate in that dress? Absolutely gorgeous! Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen... so fantastic...

The kiss(es)!

Did anyone else think that Will had a tiny bit of adorable blush on his cheeks after the second kiss?

*sighs*

Much love ladies,

Dina

home again home again jiggity jog

Hello ladies!

well, as you all definitely  know by now, I'm HOME!
People keep asking me "What was first year like?" "are you glad to be home?" "must be nice to relax eh?"

and I'm afraid my answer is currently sitting at "I don't know".

Nothing has sunk in yet. I'm done? what does that mean?
Being home? I haven't been much to be honest. (volunteering, working, visiting people etc.)
Relaxing? see above.

I suppose in some ways it's amazing to be home. A nice comfy bed. A kitchen where I can make my own food. Being soooo close to Dina (when she's here), Michele, Malcolm, and Valerie (soon!).
My family is awesome, if completly insane.

But I also had a really really great year. I met some absolutely astounding people. I learned a lot. I thought about a lot of things. It was a very important and meaningful year.
I miss all my friends from rez but, like when I leave you behind, I KNOW I will see everyone again.

I'm fairly good at that sort of thing, missing people but staying friends across time and space. I don't mean to brag, it's just the truth. I guess since I've been doing it for so long.

Anyways it's Easter weekend and boy is it full of stuff!

Yesterday I was over at Malcolm's and I met his grandmother. She's a really nice lady and gave me a huge hug, I guess they told her a bit about me :P ALSO it is spring time and Malcolm decided that to help "cure" me of my fear of cows he would take me to see the calves and guess what?? They were actually cute!!!
I also explored his barn (which sounds like a euphemism but isn't) which was lots of fun!

and I learned how to play portal. ME! playing a VIDEO GAME! and ENJOYING IT! and being kind of GOOD AT IT!

There will be epicness tonight and then tomorrow is Easter dinner and then Monday Valerie will be home and oh my goodness.
*breathes*

anyways I'm just going off on a rant here. I figured I should probably post since it's been a while.

Dina, Michele and Andre I'll see you tonight! (excited!)
Valerie, I'll see you on Monday.

Happy Easter!

Breaking the Silence

Hey ladies!

Here I am thinking it’s been ages since I’ve posted but it’s really only been since Friday. More to the point is that what I posted on Friday was only a link and not an actual post so I’ve decided to elaborate a bit.

This past Friday, for those of you who did not click on the link, was the Day of Silence. I remember having loads of fun when our group of friends took part in high school and we were scrawling notes everywhere on little bits of paper. That and the fact that the usual teachers came around the corner with worried expressions because they couldn’t hear the absolute roar of sound which usually accompanied our lunch in that particular corridor.

Recently, however, I was reminded that not everyone is so understanding of equality between sexual orientations or gender identity. I was furious when I read an article about a certain Conservative MP about a debate he had participated in at Michele’s school. A student had asked him about his thoughts on the fight for gay marriage currently going on in the United States and this MP said that he believes in the “traditional definition of marriage” as between a man and a woman and that, if he had his way, same-sex couples would have civil unions/partnerships while heterosexual couples could get married similar to what is currently done in Britain. He added afterward that, no matter what his thoughts, parliament was not going to touch the issue again. Thank God for that!

When I read this I literally had smoke coming out of my ears. I don’t know why this particular interview made me so angry but I can make a few guesses. The first reason has to be that this comes from so close to my home. This man literally lived the next street over from me for most of my life and it rankles that something like this can happen in an area which is almost a part of myself because of the years I’ve spent there. The second reason is that he seems like such a nice guy and, at least to me, in the past debates I’ve seen he has been clearly the most put together of the local candidates. To me it seems that he is the most able to represent the region with the most polish in his voice and the most influence because of his demeanour and preparation but there’s no way I want him saying anything like in this new debate where other people can hear him. The third reason is that I really thought we were leading the right way forward in Canada. I really liked having that edge in human rights but this comment has caused me to question just how safe it is to assume a moral high ground and if, for all our legislation stands, our laws really follow the majority of opinions.

The legislation I’m mentioning here is particularly the Civil Marriage Act of 2005 where our government states that civil marriage is “the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others”. If you so desire, you can read The Civil Marriage Act here. It’s not actually that long and might be worth a gander if you’re even the slightest bit interested.

There’s this thing that governments are supposed to have that is phrased “separation the church and State” and this act is a great example. Note that the definition given is not for the word “marriage” but the joined words “civil marriage”. A marriage may be only between a man and a woman in certain religions but the governing body of a State should not force its citizens into compliance with any religion, regardless of whether that religion is a majority in the population. Here again I’m going to give a blurb from The Civil Marriage Act because they do put things so nicely in words:

Allowing same-sex couples to choose their partners and to celebrate their unions is not an adequate substitute for legal recognition. … Allowing same-sex couples to marry does not result in a corresponding deprivation to opposite-sex couples.

Nor is this a case of balancing the rights of same-sex couples against the rights of religious groups who oppose same-sex marriage. Freedom of religion … ensures that religious groups have the option of refusing to solemnize same-sex marriages. The equality guarantee, however, ensures that the beliefs and practices of various religious groups are not imposed on persons who do not share those views.

On the topic of religion in general I have one major thing to say and that is that everything in the Bible can be interpreted and is interpreted differently by different people on a continual basis. Whether something is written in the Bible in terms of expected/demanded behaviour is a matter of how one reads those words. No language is completely unambiguous and this book which so many people love to talk about is certainly not an exception. All that being said there are a few things in this book that I would like to mention.

I've heard a lot of people proclaim that same-sex couples must be something against God because “God made it Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”. Let’s take a look at that, shall we?

“The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)

Now I don’t know about you but I think there are some very individual circumstantial reasons why a woman might be a better companion for the first man in the entire world. If you’re going to create a populated world you do, in fact, need the first two to be able to produce more. Fast forward to the modern age now and look at our circumstances. There are now issues of overpopulation. The situation has changed. Is it unreasonable to imagine that God’s opinion of what would make a “suitable helper” for a man has likewise changed?

Another phrase I’ve heard used by those opposed to same-sex marriage is “sexual preference” instead of “sexual orientation”. Believe it or not there is a difference between the two and it’s rather important. Using “sexual preference” implies a choice in who someone is physically attracted to while “sexual orientation” acknowledges that sexual attraction is an unconscious phenomenon. Along with the usual arguments about how anyone could possibly believe that a person would choose to live in a way which would lead the their harassment or even execution in some parts of the world I will offer that, in the words of Lady Gaga, that those who prefer partners of the same sex were “born this way”. To say “conceived this way” would be an overstatement but “born this way” certainly appears to be true. Hormone levels in the amniotic fluid have been noted in many studies to have a strong influence on sexual orientation. If you want to know more about these studies I would suggest typing “prenatal sexual orientation” into Google Scholar and cruising through some of the articles there.

What I really don’t understand is how those Christians against same-sex couples can support their hate when their beloved Bible speaks so highly and so often of love. It doesn't sit well with me to have people say they believe “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23) and then act in a way which would prevent the acknowledgement of love by the law of their State.

Well ladies and gentlemen; I welcome you to the end of my rant. I hope you take some of what I’ve said and roll it around in your head for a while so that it may adhere to some of your previous thoughts and spin them off in some new directions.

Love you all,

Dina

Twas the Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even—

As it happened, there was a creature stirring, a Valerie creature. This Valerie creature had sleep that had been troubled by many dreams before one of them, being so very vivid, had awoken her from her slumber.

A moment of disorientation held Valerie when she woke but it quickly passed as she found herself in her room at home. She snuggled her face further into her smurf-covered pillow and breathed deeply to take in that lovely smell of home. She’d missed this when she’d been away for school. Valerie knew every hum and click that happened in this house. She knew all the smells and all the squeaks that would emerge from the floors. She knew—

There was a noise that she didn’t recognize.

In was coming from the basement.

Valerie lay very still in her bed, listening. It was a series of creaks, not unlike those that came from the futon downstairs where she had spent the majority of many summers lounging, but who would be there now? It was, Valerie checked her clock, 2:30am on Christmas Day! Had one of her parents gotten up and gone downstairs? Had her brother snuck in later when she had been asleep? She’d been told he hadn’t been coming until later in the morning…

Valerie wasn’t sure what the noise was, but what she was sure of was that if she didn’t figure it out she wasn’t going to get any sleep. She grabbed her glasses but didn’t bother with her usual hair elastic before heading out of her room on route to the basement.

Three steps and three creaks of the floor later, Valerie was cursing to herself under her breath. How in the world had Craig ever managed to find a noise-free path through the house she would never know but right now she certainly wished she did.

As much as she knew that she wouldn’t sleep if she didn’t check out what was causing the noise there was no good reason to wake her parents up for her bit of insanity. After vowing to take lighter steps Valerie started moving again toward the basement.

Just as she was heading down the stairs she heard the noise again. It was definitely the springs on the couch but how? Craig had said that he wasn’t staying over this year—in fact it had been the talk of the house for the last week as their mom had tried to figure out what was so important that would keep him away on Christmas Eve. Valerie knew that if he’d gone through all that effort to keep his distance for a few hours he certainly wouldn’t be back in the house so soon.

But if it wasn’t Craig, what could it be? Valerie had no idea. She had come to the bottom of the stairs by this point and took a moment to stop and appreciate the relative lack of squeaks that had happened on her trip. Maybe there was something to this noiseless travel after all… Then came the noise of the couch springs from across the room and damn it if she wasn’t as curious as Dina on Facebook chat!

When she first peeked around the corner to peer into the room Valerie’s eyes immediately focused on the Christmas tree which had all its lights glowing. This was intensely odd for Valerie because her family always turned the lights off before going to bed. The tree was in the basement so there was obviously no way that anyone would see it during the night and no reason to keep in lit when no one would see it.

When she pulled her eyes away from that first oddity she noticed something else strange. There was someone lying on her couch, someone who obviously didn’t know how to dress for winter because she could see more skin than clothes, someone who had a red bow on his dark head of hair, someone who was now looking at her with a smirk on his handsome face and a mysterious light in his green eyes…

Oh my good God, Valerie thought, Jay Crawford is lying on my couch…

Oh, and he was and by all things under the sun was he beautiful. His intense green eyes she remembered from her time in high school had the same power to pierce right into her thoughts and turn them all into incoherent babbles, his short dark hair still made her finger itch with the need to thread through the strands and grab hold but this was where the similarities to her high school days ended. While she’d been able to guess at the shape of his body and the curve of his muscles when she was sitting in the back of her grade 12 English class she’d never actually seen the real thing.

Now she was seeing the whole thing. Her eyes slowly took in the curve of his neck and how it flowed smoothly into his broad shoulders. Her gaze gently caressed his muscled arms and his powerful hands. She took in his defined chest, bare but for a light dusting of hair, before her eyes wandered down to his belly button and the trail that lead down between his hips…

The whole time that her eyes travelling his body she had also felt his eyes on her. Valerie felt the heat of them as they were fixed on her, watching her watching him. It was all she could do to keep from going up in flames. While she managed to keep most of her body from showing signs of fire there were a few things she couldn’t control, the most noticeable of these being her cheeks which had turned bright red.

Finally Valerie was able, by some miracle, to pull her eyes away from his body to focus back on his face and more specifically his eyes.

“W-what are you doing here?” She managed to breathe out. The question was so soft that she really wouldn’t be surprised if he hadn’t heard her.

Apparently he had an excellent sense of hearing because her question brought a sigh, not of exasperation or frustration, but of resignation. Jay sat up on the couch and then stood up. He took the two steps that separated them before reaching for her hands. When he held them both in his he looked up at her and asked “May I?” to which she nodded, not quite sure what else to do. He squeezed her hands gently and shuffled his feet nervously before he began his explanation.

“Well, it’s a bit of a long story,” he said. He took a deep breath before continuing.

“I know we weren’t really the closest of friends in high school. Sure, we talked a few times and we were in some of the same classes but the few times we did talk I really felt like I could relate to you, that you would understand anything I had to tell you or at least put the effort into the conversation.”

After Jay finished saying this he paused, seeming to draw some courage from their joined hands.

“That about covers what I thought about you in high school and I hadn’t really thought about it in depth until I saw you downtown last week. I don’t think you saw me. You were walking with a bunch of your friends and it was like I saw you for the first time that day. You were having so much fun and laughing and I just wanted to be a part of it…”

Valerie’s head was swimming. She couldn’t quite pull it together.

“Okay… but why the, you know, socks and—” Valerie trailed off. She hadn’t really meant to ask that question but now that it had popped out of her mouth she was genuinely curious.

“Oh,” Jay mumbled, a slightly blush showing on his cheeks. “Well I didn’t really know what to do so I was doing some reading and I…there were stories and I…grand gesture and I…so, yeah.” He gestured vaguely with their joined hands. “This…”

Valerie had to smile at this.

“I’m not sure what you were reading,” she teased, “but I think I might know where to look for it.”

Jay looked up from his nervous contemplation of his socks to her eyes seeming confused by her light tone.

“So you’re not totally creeped out by what I said?” he asked.

“No!” She said a bit too loudly. She clamped her lips shut after she’d said it and looked a bit embarrassed. “I actually kind of might maybe feel a bit of the same way…”

Jay blinked for a minute before a blindingly bright smile lit his face and he positively beamed at her.

“Really?” he asked.

“Yeah, really.” she smiled shyly at him.

And there, in the Clifton family basement in the very early morning of Christmas Day, Jay Crawford pulled Valerie Clifton in close and gave her their first kiss.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Written by: Dawn, Valerie and Michele for Dina

It was a chilly winter’s night and Dina Briant was shivering in her brightly coloured wool socks.

As she trudged into the living room her sharp blue eyes lit upon the cold stone of the empty fireplace. Dina, being the intelligent person that she was, had discovered a solution to her unpleasantly cool temperature.

She headed across the room, where just to the left of the hearth sat a pile of firewood. Dina was grateful that she had taken the time earlier to methodically stack and organise the wood (and yes, there was a lot of it).

She lit the kindling, and as the sparks began to fly, she figured that it would take some time for the fire’s warmth to spread throughout the room.

Dina decided to leave the fire to its own devices for the time being and strolled into the kitchen. She set the kettle on to boil and retrieved her favourite mug and tea from the cupboard.
The tea-making process was a relaxing one and Dina held the steaming mug in her hands, allowing its heat to warm her.

She made her way back to the living room where the fire was crackling merrily across from her favourite love seat. Dina settled herself down onto the couch and made herself comfortable in the now much warmer room. She started to lift the mug to her lips when out of the corner of her eye she noticed something odd. Her blazing fire had suddenly lost its orange and yellow glow and lit up in a dazzling shade of emerald. Her eyes widened at the strange occurrence and she wondered what could possibly be happening.

Without warning, the body of a young man tumbled out of the fireplace and onto her freshly swept floor.
Dina was both terribly confused and slightly irritated.

The stranger gingerly pushed himself up off the ground with a groan, and dusted off his knees.  He turned around, and Dina’s eyes widened with shock, her frozen hands nearly dropped her steaming mug.  The young man had fine white blond hair, which was long enough for the fringe to fall over his silvery gray eyes.  He was incredibly pale, and his jet black, high collared robes only proved to accentuate his light skin tone.  She would know this young man anywhere.

“Malfoy?”

His head turned sharply toward her and his eyes bored into her. “Who are you, and why do you know my name?”

Dina was taken aback for a moment, but quickly decided on a course of action.  She gave him a slight smirk and replied “Yes I know your name, what are you doing in my living room?”

Malfoy glared at her, “I asked you a question, and I insist you answer me before throwing your own meaningless chitchat at me.”

“But you’re the one intruding in my house so I insist you answer my question first,” Dina replied calmly.

Their banter continued for a few moments, with Malfoy never successfully unnerving her into telling him how she knew who he was.

Malfoy was angered by this girl, but intrigued at the same time.  She was facing him down with all the cool and cunning of a bonafide Slytherin.  He took a moment to let his gaze trace her body. Perhaps there was far more to this girl than what meets the eye.

Against his better judgement, Malfoy decided to give in. “I was flooing to the Hogs Head, but somehow, I ended up here instead.” He sneered at her and continued in a patronizing drawl, “Those incompetent fools at the Floo Network must’ve been getting into the Firewhiskey again.”  He ended his sentence with the sexiest and most satisfied smirk he could muster. There was no way that she would understand his answer, and as such, she would finally be rattled.

Dina snorted. “Well I would have gone to the Leaky Cauldron or the Three Broomsticks myself.” A satisfied grin slowly formed on her face as Malfoy’s smirk slid from his. “Why didn’t you just apparate?”

Malfoy was momentarily speechless before he could compose himself to respond to, what was now, her clearly taunting him. “You’re a witch aren’t you? You must be!”

“Sadly I am not.”

This was all he could take; he stalked forward suddenly, and in a last effort to confront her, planted his hands firmly on either side of her shoulders. If Dina’s knees had not been tucked up under her body, his body would have been pressing up against them. As it was, he was close enough for his bangs to graze her forehead and his steely gaze locked with her glimmering stare. He opened his mouth and very slowly spoke to her. “You’re going to tell me, right now, exactly how you know of myself, and my world.”

Malfoy’s warm breathe tickled Dina’s face, and as she fought to keep her eyes locked with his, rather than allowing them to avert his intense gaze and wander elsewhere, Dina coolly replied, “Or what?”

He seemed at a loss for words, and she snaked her arm under his to set her long forgotten mug of tea on the table by the end of the couch, which brought her face tantalizingly closer to his.  “You’re not going to be able to go anywhere for a bit. As a muggle, I am kind of lacking in the Floo department.” She offered a slight smile. “Would you care to get comfortable?”

Screw it all, he thought to himself. Her words in combination with their close proximity were enough to drive him over the edge of reason.  With his hands still braced against the back of the love seat, he closed the minute distance between himself and this mysteriously beautiful girl. Dina started to speak, but her words were caught on his lips which now covered hers. Whatever she was going to say no longer mattered, as this kiss expressed more than even the most carefully worded of sentences. He was asking her questions, pleading with his tongue, and the only answer she could give was to kiss him back. His rigid stance weakened and he loosened his grip from the back of the couch. Dina seized the opportunity and reached for his wrists, it wasn’t called a “love seat” for nothing. She gently tugged at them, inviting her visitor, once again, to make himself comfortable beside her.

Malfoy, or Draco as she had started to think of him, snapped his eyes open and pulled away. Their eyes locked once again and, slightly breathless, Draco wondered how to face this challenge. Never before had HE been given such an order... yet he wanted so badly to obey. Dina kept her sultry gaze on his, waiting.

“Tell me one thing first” Draco said finally, after a long moment of silence.

Dina nodded, indicating to him to go on.

“Who are you? And how do you know so much about me?”

             Dina laughed “That’s two things.”

        Draco cursed silently.

“But please, sit.”

Draco obliged somewhat reluctantly yet gracefully sank onto the cushion beside her.

“Tell me,” she said, “How close are you to a lady named Joann Rowling...”

A Knight in Shining Armour

CRASH!

The sound shook Valerie violently as it traveled up her spine but she hardly noticed. All she could see was the glare of the sun that flashed off of the sword and shield that clashed together before her and the buckling of the blue knight’s knees.

Time seemed to slow as Valerie watched the blue knight fall to his knees with a thud. She watched in horror, her eyes wide, as the knight dressed in yellow advanced and pulled back his arm for another blow.

“NO!”

Valerie didn’t realize until afterwards that she had made the cry. She slapped her hand across her mouth and tried to swallow but her throat was too dry. Why did it matter so much? Why did she feel so connected to the knight in blue? She had no idea who he was, no one did, as his face was hidden under his helmet and his armour, colours and chainmail covered anything else that might identify him.

The yellow knight’s next stroke began to descend and Valerie’s heart beat in her throat. The blue knight had barely raised his shield and she knew that it would not be enough to protect him when the yellow knight’s sword fell.

Valerie couldn’t bear to see the last stroke of the sword and was about to shut her eyes against the image when the blue knight spun and her eyes widened again.

A second crash resounded in the arena as the knight in yellow fell to the ground. The blue knight had managed to knock the yellow knight off balance with a desperate kick to his knee before and delivering a blow to the yellow knight’s back. The tide had turned.

Valerie watched in admiration for the next few minutes as the blue knight took control of the battle. There was something in the way he moved, she thought, that she recognized. It wasn’t his fighting style, although she did know the names of the different strikes and blocks, but something in the fluidity of his movement and the set of the knight’s broad shoulders that her eyes caught and followed.

In a few moments the battle was complete and the blue knight raised his sword in victory; he had won the tournament. Valerie’s spirits were as high as the tip of the blade and, somehow, just as dependent on the knight’s movements.

The King had descended from his throne on the opposite side of the arena and made his way to the middle of the battlefield. As the blue knight approached him, the King declared:

“Victory is rarely achieved by those who act alone and is most certainly never celebrated alone. Therefore, before you receive your reward, choose for yourself a consort from amongst those gathered to share in your triumph.”

The blue knight turned and began to approach the spectators. The knight’s helmet and visor were still in place but even so several of the audience sensed his eyes searching among them. Those closest could make out the flash of emerald from his eyes as he surveyed the crowd.

After a few moments of searching, the knight’s attention abruptly fixed on one amid the crowd and he began to climb the steps into the audience. Within a few steps he stood before his chosen, a young woman with her dark hair swept back into a ponytail and her blue eyes wide with shock.

Valerie’s breath caught in her throat.

It can’t be me, she thought. He can’t have picked me…

But there he was, waiting patiently with his hand extended for her to take and his green eyes burning into her with their intensity.

Valerie wasn’t sure how it happened but her hand made its way into the knight’s where it was received with gentle pressure. Valerie found herself being led down into the arena with a loud chorus of cheers, blatantly jealous looks and applause.

When Valerie’s foot first hit the soft earth of the battlefield her mind flashed briefly to how odd this scene must look to the audience – a knight in full armour and colours hand in hand with a girl dressed in a t-shirt and jeans. This thought did not possess her for long, however, and her mind was soon back to its previous focus; the rhythm of the knight’s steps, the gentle pressure of his hand in hers and the warmth that seemed to radiate from his palm.

In what seemed like no time the pair was in front of the King. The knight bowed and Valerie started to bow before realizing that some kind of an improvised curtsey was probably expected and attempting to change her movement mid-bow.

Most of the time Valerie may be more coordinated than other people but in the middle of a battlefield, standing in front of a King and attempting to curtsy was not most of the time.

Fortunately for Valerie, she was standing next to a knight. The blue knight wrapped his left arm around her waist to stop her from falling before anyone else had even noticed that she was off balance.

Valerie was about to thank the knight for saving her from falling when the King’s voice rang out across the arena.

“Remove your helmet Sir Crawford.”

Crawford? No! It couldn’t be! Valerie thought frantically.

As the knight removed his helmet, however, it proved to be true. Valerie’s knight in shining armour was none other than Jay Crawford. After handing his helmet to a waiting page, Jay turned to look at Valerie, his dark hair mussed from being under his helmet, his green eyes slightly unsure as they met hers but his lips curled into a crooked smile at the sight of her surprised face.

“Hi there,” Jay said before the King interrupted him.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I present your champion, Sir Jay Crawford!”

With that the crowd went wild as Jay picked up the offered champion’s sword and raised it high in victory. The arm that had been around Valerie’s waist slid to once again capture her hand as the pair turned to present the sword to the audience.

At least, presenting the sword to the audience was the gesture. To the pair in the middle of the battlefield, however, there was only the other person; the rhythm of their steps together, the warmth of their joined hands and heat in their locked gaze.

In a sleepy town....

Goodmorning ladies it's Tuesday!  I am currently sitting on a real nice blow up bed with a memory foam cover. Why, you may ask? Well, I'm at my aunt's house!

Having a few days off from exams I decided it would be nice to take a break from sitting in my OH SO LOVELY rez room, eating DELICIOUS caf food and listening to the SYMPHONY of construction. Luckily for me, my aunt a) lives close by and b) thinks I'm amazing so c) didn't mind letting me crash here for 2 nights.

Sunday morning my aunt came to pick me up from Rez. She brought my Grandma. We went out for lunch then headed to sleepyville. Seriously it's so quiet here. it's amazing. On Sunday we wandered the town, did some errands, got caught in the rain etc. My uncle and cousins had just gotten back from a ski trip so it was a wee bit hectic :P We had delicious homemade noms and I baked two different types of desserts! ( My cousins didn't mind me so much then :P)

On Monday we decided we'd go shopping! Not wanting to go back to the capital where I had been, we instead drove south to the lake and the city of our most " prestigious " University. ( I can't hate too much cause Michele's gotta do stuff there :P )
It was over 20 degrees out! I bought two new spring dresses and in texting Michele about it, decided that I am going to wear nothing but sundresses for all of may and June :P

I also got my hair cut! Nothing super short, but  I think it's cute and I really like it.

I have also been attacked by a cat. Seriously, this cat adores me and I'm not sure why. But even -=rtre=yyyyyy65 Ya, that was her. she won't leave me alone!

( also I did NOT plan that! she was sitting beside me which prompted me to mention her but I SWEAR I didn't put her on the keyboard! it was a spontaneous cat act! )

She also likes to sit on top of me. We cuddled last night, I enjoyed the body heat lol.

Yesterday evening was pretty chill. Everyone was just sitting around doing stuff. My uncle and one cousin play guitar so they were strumming away, we drank lots of tea, had a ten min power outage.  My cousins also got a heck of a lot cooler when they told me they watch Tobuscus and Wheezy, and have even seen Vlog brothers!

anyways I head back to rez this afternoon, but there are only 4 more sleeps until I'll be back in the Patch!

Dawn out!

Insiphonating dark chocolate with Mr. PokerFace

Hey ladies!

Soo... last night a cappella concert was unreal... SOOOOO GOOOOOD!

I met up with some band friends (Emily, Craig, Janene and Alejandro) for dinner at East Side Mario’s together with about 10 of Craig’s relatives. We were sitting close to Craig’s grandpa and so we were treated to a list of family accomplishments (“That’s my oldest, there, and he graduated from Western and now he does this and those are his lovely daughters. The oldest one is in her third year at Queens, that’s her, there, and her sister goes to Windsor and is taking...”). Craig was a bit concerned that we were getting bored by stories but after I told him about how my Nonno talks on and on about things that guests never understand because of his thick Italian accent I think he felt a bit better.

About half way through dinner Emily said that she was suffonsified (it’s not in any dictionary but is, in fact, a word). This is apparently a thing/word the band has talked about before because Alejandro piped up with “Are you sure you’re not insiphonated?” (Insiphonated is apparently not a word, even though suffonsified is.) I had assumed it was and formed my own definition of insiphonated because they burst by bubble. I shared my thought that “Insiphonated is when you’re trying to siphon something but you suck too hard and get some in your mouth”(as in, when you suck something so hard you get some in your mouth you are insiphonated... or something like that). No sooner had the words left my mouth when I realized exactly what that sounded like (eyes widening like “I cannot believe I just said that!”) and at the exact same moment Craig made this face like he had just “insiphonated” something.

I lost it.

I was giggling to myself for about 5 solid minutes, if not more. Janene picked up on what I was thinking and had a little chuckle which me but the others, most especially Craig, did not pick up what I was so hysterical over. That make me laugh even harder. I think the rest of the family thought I was cracked but it was soooo funny!

After dinner we made our way over to the theatre where we were joined by my friend Mr. Klein. Mr. Klein and I caught up for a bit and during that catching up I learned that he really enjoyed my comments on a slash fiction page on Facebook. This rather made my day because, apparently, he hadn’t known much about the HP slash fiction community but had really enjoyed seeing the things on this page. I think I may have created another Drarry shipper! So exciting! I told him about Dawn and how we loved exchanging good fics when we found them and said I would send him some (which I definitely did). I also told him that I’d written one and that if he could figure out which one was mine I’d be impressed. He said he would try so I look forward to his search if he ever gets around to it. Somewhere in here he also put the image into my head of what would happen if it got out that I wrote graphic slash fiction during some kind of family holiday dinner. That imagined scenario will give me many giggles in the future.

The band people were trying to make me have another giggle fit in the lobby of the theatre by saying insiphonated and having Craig try and recreate his face and while I giggled quite a few times there was nowhere near the outpouring of mirth that happened at the dinner table. Mr. Klein was a bit confused until I told him I inferred something related to slash fiction when they said the word “insiphonated” at which point he was all giggles, too. I love friends...

This was Mr. Klein’s first ever attendance of an a cappella performance so I was trying to explain what a tenor, baritone and bass were and I ended up with an analogy of chocolate and cheese which he very much enjoyed. Mr. Klein particularly enjoys dark chocolate, haha, and so do I!

The concert was absolutely fantastical! So many jokes and so much amazing music! One unfortunate thing was that Mr. PokerFace (who is a member of the group) was not feeling very well and only sung his part of “I’ll get him hard, show him what I’ve got!” and no other solos. There are so many good voices in the group that this hardly mattered at all but he’s a great performer and it was sad to hear he wasn’t doing so well. Fortunately, I’m sure he’ll return to the group next year with even more outrageous antics for everyone to enjoy.

So, overall, yesterday was a super fun day and I loved it!

Ciao,

Dina

Parents are awesome

Parents are just the greatest, aren't they? Mine certainly are! I am probably one of the most spoiled 19 year olds I know.

Yesterday, after asking a bunch of questions about my computer and hearing all about my various frustrations with it, my mom announced that they were coming down to drop off her computer and take mine home for some TLC. What they didn’t tell me was what else they were bringing down.

I now have a TV, VCR/DVD player and a lawnmower. I don’t even have a lawn to mow let! Crazy beans
!
See my not-lawn?

It was so nice to see them, especially in the middle of all my exam craziness because it’s so easy to get stuck only in my own head and my notes this time of year. I need a little kick out the door sometimes and I couldn’t ask for nicer people to give it to me.

Speaking of kicking myself out the door, tonight I’m going to an a cappella concert given on campus by a group of delicious boys. So excited! I’ll probably tell you all about it very soon after...

Right now I have got to get back to some studying. It’s not fun but it’s necessary and so much more bearable now that I have things to look forward to and things to do.

Love you ladies!

*Sniff*

Ladies!

I got my computer back but it's all wrong!

It's all XP and before it was all Vista and I know everyone hated Vista but I really didn't mind and I miss it now that it's not around and I don't know how to get it back because the people gave me all the XP disc and only one Vista disc and the Vista disc doesn't do the same thing as the XP discs and makes no sense when it pops up and I don't know what to do but I feel like I should have a Vista disc and be able to load it somehow but I'm computationally challenged and it sucks and I just wish it would all go back to the way it was or, even better, that nothing had ever gone wrong and I wouldn't have missed chatting with all of you yesterday because I really did miss it a lot and I miss you guys a lot and I miss my old Vista system because even if everyone in the whole wide world thinks that it's full of problems it never gave me any problems and we were happy together... *sobs*

Yeah, it's exams...

A Weekend Without...

Pants Folding :P

lol, as you may or may not know, Andre is visiting this weekend to go to the Fleming open house tomorrow. :D I'm going to pick him up at the train station in t-minus 2 hours :D

He will be staying until sunday afternoon/evening. :D

And I have proposed that we go the whole weekend without folding pants :P
a) because it will be very difficult to find an opportunity to do so
b) it seems like we do a lot of it (no kidding, its pretty darn enjoyable :P)
c) i want to go on a *real* date :P

This may seem a little backwards, but due to the distance thing, Andre and I have never really been on a true, official 'date' :P So saturday night, we're doing dinner and a movie :P And noooo pants folding :D

So i shall let you ladies know how it goes!

I love you alllllll <3 <3 <3

Tiny bubbles....

Hello ladies! How are you all ?  Has the joy of exam season descended upon you yet?

I had my first exam today, it went well - but I feel odd. I don't think I've fully realized that the end of the year is upon us. It hasn't sunk in that I'm almost done. I'm not even super stressed over the exams I have left.

I think it's because I've found ways to stop myself from getting stressed. I still know exams will be a challenge, and I study - but I'm trying not to let that get to me.

Yesterday I went to a tea store with a friend and got some Maple tea. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm looking forward to it! We also stopped for Gelato and omg it was so good I almost died from a taste-gasm. Seriously, if you're ever in town I'm taking you.
I've also had some chances to wander the market. When I get home I'm bringing little trinkets for people I love. :)

Today for a study break one of my podmates and I went outside and blew bubbles for 20 minutes. It was awesome :) Bubbles are beautiful and they make me smile.
A few people commented that we looked like we were having fun, and that our bubbles were beautiful. It's nice to think that we put smiles on some people's faces.
We're having gorgeous weather here and I wish I could send you all a big slice of sunshine with a bubble, but this will have to do.

Keep Smiling :)

A day with a Mom

Hey ladies!

Today my mom came up to visit me and generally just hang out for the day. It's a bit weird to me, to be applying the term "hanging out" to what I do wtih my mom but that was pretty much it.

Your Pants were there when my mom tried sushi for the first time and liked it! Huzzah! Your parents are next Valerie! Or maybe just your mom. My dad seems rather keen on avoiding the whole spectacle.

In scarier news it took me four hours to do an intense read through of my biochemistry notes and that's four hours of actual reading. I didn't have music playing. I wasn't playing Season 6 of House in the background. I was just reading and it took four hours.

I might be a little bit screwed. I might not be. Regardless, it means a very busy and hermitish week for me.

For dinner tonight we made homemade pizza and it was absolutely delicious! Nom nom nom nom nom! ... nom!

We ended the evening by watching RENT and drinking camomile tea. It was a good time.

Night ladies!

Need sleep but I post, yes, I do

Good evening ladies,

Did you know that sleep deprivation has a taste? It’s a rather disconcerting sour taste and I don’t like it. Unfortunately for me, my mouth is full of it. Bleh…

My momma is coming up to visit me tomorrow. Nothing special is happening, she’s just coming to visit and apparently clean my house while I study hardcore for my biochemistry final. I say apparently clean my house because, as Valerie will testify, I have not been the most vigilant over the last week or so and have fallen behind in my duties in favour of completing homework assignments.

Today, when I told myself I was going to do some of it myself and get my notes together in order to finish a piece of fiction for the enjoyment of my lovely editor Dawn, I fell asleep on my couch. Whoops… I swear, it’ll get it done. I’ve already written an enormous amount so I just have to get it into my head to get the rest typed out and it’ll be done in short order. Unfortunately, writing smut in the presence of my mother is not something I’m comfortable with so there will be some avoidance.

I started this post a half hour ago and haven’t finished it because I’ve been chatting it up with the American via Skype. It’s a very distracting business, especially when it concerns my writing, haha! You will have him to blame or thank when you read my next publication. That’s all I’ll say about that.

Today I wrote my last evil midterm in your Pants and I think it went well. I didn’t spontaneously combust when Mr. Lively sat down one seat away from me with literally five seconds to go before the start of the exam but it was a close call. Somehow I managed to focus enough to complete the test with my usual manner of efficiency, 15 minutes for a test on one third of the course material.

Your Pants also sat with me through my last official lecture of second year earlier in the morning. Crazy stuff that. I’m too tired to continue into my medley of emotions about half my university undergrad career being over so maybe later.

Love you ladies muchly,

Dina

Unexpected Hapiness

So last weekend was very unexpected for me… :P What I thought was going to be a normal weekend full of nothingness turned out to be something completely different.

It started with a conversation on Friday night when Andre misunderstood a question I asked him. I was pondering whether I wanted to go to the fish lift and said to him “hmm, do I want to go on a fish lift tomorrow…?” And he misread what I typed and thought I was asking him if he wanted to come. So this led to a slightly awkward and very confusing conversation which was eventually cleared up ☺ And Andre ended up inviting himself along anyways :P

So one uncomfortable conversation with the ‘rents, a very early morning and a malfunctioning break light later, I found myself at the train station picking up Andre at 8:20am. I do not do early mornings. :P But for Andre, I will ☺

We got to the fish lift late (9:15-ish) and therefore there were no jobs for us to do :P So we watched ☺ And when my parents arrived, we talked ☺ My dad and Andre seemed to hit it off and talked about everything from rifles, to golf, to hunting, to motorcycles. Aka, guy stuff :P and my mom ran around introducing me to all the Ministry peeps trying to get me in with people who could potentially be hiring me… :P

Anyways, after the fish lift, my parents went to go visit my Grandma, which left Andre and I with the house to ourselves for a couple hours. :P We had lunch, but on the short notice, I had not had time to clean my room. Therefore after lunch, Andre and I made good use of the basement :P

After, we went to the barn where I taught a lesson, introduced Andre to Indie, and showed him around the property a little. Then we went back home and napped for a little bit till my parents came home.

We had dinner, and chatted and it was all very nice ☺ My brother wasn’t home, but the conversation came easily, and Andre was a perfect gentleman ☺

Andre and I left for the train station and got there slightly early, only to find that his train had been delayed a whole hour. Which we weren’t exactly complaining about, because it gave us a whole other hour together ☺ which we made excellent use of :D

Probably the best moment of the night came when we were unpacking Andre’s stuff from the car. I had my tea in one hand and his French vanilla in the other. He put on his back pack and went to turn around to face me, and in doing so, knocked my hand, and the tea that was in it, sending it flying. Tea spilled everywhere and I screamed and, acting on instinct, grabbed for it. And I caught it! :D I was so so sooo proud of myself, and about half the tea was still left in it :D But it was sooooo funny. It was one of those moments where you laugh so hard your belly hurts and you have to bend over in order to breathe. I couldn’t speak and could barely laugh I was laughing so hard. It was a really really good moment ☺

But then we had to say good bye. But this time, it was a little better ☺ Because I get to see him again this Friday :D He’s coming for the open house for the college he is going to go to next year on Saturday and will possibly be staying until Sunday, which point I am hopefully going back to rez with him :D

So in that sense, I am very happy. In another sense, I am not. But I will not dampen this happy post with money issues, because it is not necessary. Maybe some other time…

I love you all, and miss you like crazy. I can’t wait to see you after exams! :D

Oh hey, a tumbleweed just rolled by...

Oh ladies…

Things I should not be doing now? This is definitely one but, well, it’s some kind of progress in a writing field so I’ll take what I can get.

Inspired by John’s vlog on Friday I give you the same number of random thoughts as there are pieces of Voldemort’s soul:

1. Hey essay! I know you can hear me! Where art thou and wherefore art thou not on paper yet? You don’t know? Neither do I!

2. Why in the world would I buy a 2L thing [read: bottle] of club soda? Do you know what club soda tastes like? It takes like carbon dioxide. Antinoms.

3. There is dirt everywhere. Everything needs cleaning. I need cleaning. Gah, university does things to me.

4. Studying for my last Evil test has been evil, except for the part where it’s not because it only contains one portion of the evil prototype. The three parts are 1) interpersonal (This is not true because it’s just me that I’m torturing by studying for it) 2) harm (Did you read the word torture in the last bit? I don’t like reading about the real thing over and over again) and 3) unjustifiability (This entire venture is justified because I want to get an awesome mark on this test).

5. My hobbit toes seem to look even hairier than the last time I checked. Sexy, I know.

6. Sushi for lunch was soooo good! The Ottawa maki definitely wasn’t as good as the stuff from the patch but it was definitely yummy. My favourite two things were the two things that we [read: Valerie and I] couldn’t figure out the name of because we couldn’t remember what we ordered. I think one of them was the dynamite roll…

7. I feel too young to be thinking about things like life insurance and wills but I have to and it sucks. It makes my breath feel heavy and my mind explode.

8. I enjoy wearing skinny jeans with heels. Yes, I do.

Much love ladies,

Dina

You Make me smile like the sun ... :)

I see where Dina's coming from with all the frustration, we've certainly all been there.
When I'm down I find that music has an extraordinary way of bringing me back up again.

So I thought I'd share some music that might make you all smile :)

Smile - Uncle Kracker
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night

You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild,
oo you make me smile."

The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you

I knew I wouldn't forget you, and so I went and let you blow my mind...
I knew when we collided, you're the one I have decided, who's one of my kind...

That's all for now. Love you muchly and DFTBA

*grumble*grumble*essay*grumble*

Hey ladies,

Today was an exercise in frustration. This is not to say that I did not enjoy the company of our lovely Valerie but there are things that were driving me batty today that made frustration a constant undertone to my day.

So in celebration of that here is a list of frustrations:

Unfinished homework

Unfinished homework that is due very soon

An official document that does not exist in official records

Repeated survey questions

Bystanders in genocides

My snappishness when I’m stressed

My worries about being snappish when I’m stressed when I should be focused on the aforementioned unfinished homework

Gigantic enemies in video games that just won’t die

Diffusion of responsibility

Deindividuation

Dust bunnies

Dirty laundry

Wet hair

Malfunction of the thought-motor control-writing continuum

Lack of proper options

Jerks

UST

Self-deprecation

Well then... That was cheerful wasn't it? I can definitely tell that exams are here...

Love you all,

Dina
